In 1991, four timber associations grouped together and formed the Malaysian Timber Organisation (MTO). The grouping changed its name in 2001 to the Malaysian Timber Association (MTA), and membership expanded under the presidency of the late Y.A.M. Tunku Tan Sri Dato' Osman Ahmad (2001-2004). Currently, the following are members of MTA:

Association of Malaysian Bumiputra Timber & Furniture Entrepreneurs (PEKA)

Established in October 1991, PEKA supports the aspirations of Malaysia’s timber industry while safeguarding the interests of Bumiputera timber and furniture entrepreneurs. It ensures that Bumiputera entrepreneurs equally benefit from the opportunities in the timber sector. PEKA is recognized by the Malaysian Timber Industry Board (MTIB) and receives support from various stakeholders, including timber manufacturers, exporters, loggers, traders, and professionals. The association plays a vital role in promoting inclusivity and growth within the Bumiputera community in the timber and furniture industry.

Malaysian Furniture Council (MFC)

As the sole national trade body, MFC represents the furniture industry at federal and state government levels. It aims to foster cooperation among industry players, uphold the industry’s reputation, and promote Malaysian furniture globally. MFC organizes exhibitions, seminars, and training programs, including the annual Export Furniture Exhibition Malaysia (EFE), to enhance trade and competitiveness. The council also works closely with public and private sectors to implement policies that benefit the industry, ensuring its sustainable development and global recognition.

Malaysian Wood Industries Association (MWIA)

Founded in 1957, MWIA represents seven state associations in Peninsular Malaysia and members engaged in upstream and downstream timber activities. Originally focused on sawmillers, it now covers a wide range of timber related businesses. MWIA collaborates with government agencies like the Malaysian Timber Industry Board (MTIB) and the Malaysian Timber Council (MTC) to promote the interests of the timber industry. Its objectives include fostering industry growth, maintaining government rapport, and ensuring the sustainable development of Malaysia’s wood industries.

Malaysian Wood Moulding & Joinery Council (MWMJC)

MWMJC represents the moulding and joinery sector, promoting its interests both domestically and internationally. The council provides strategic direction to members, emphasizing environmental responsibility and sustainability. It advocates for compliance with forestry regulations and timber trade policies while fostering innovation to maximize raw material usage and minimize environmental impact. MWMJC also promotes Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles, encouraging members to adopt sustainable practices in their operations.

Sabah Timber Industries Association (STIA)

Established in 1981, STIA represents upstream and downstream timber industries in Sabah, including sawmilling, plywood manufacturing, and timber trading. It supports the Sabah Timber Legality Assurance System (TLAS), ensuring credible and sustainable timber production. STIA collaborates with the government to formulate and implement timber industry policies, while also promoting good relationships among members and fostering trade missions and exhibitions. The association is committed to the sustainable development of Sabah’s timber resources.

Sarawak Timber Association (STA)

Founded in 1971, STA is the only timber trade association representing both upstream and downstream sectors in Sarawak. With approximately 360 members, it serves as a liaison between the government and the timber industry. STA promotes sustainable practices, supports legal timber trade, and advocates for policies that benefit its members. The association plays a crucial role in ensuring the responsible development of Sarawak’s timber industry while maintaining environmental and social standards.

The Malaysian Panel-Products Manufacturers' Association (MPMA)

Established in 1965, MPMA represents plywood and panel product manufacturers in Malaysia. It promotes the manufacture, export, and use of plywood and related products while setting quality standards for the industry.
