MTC Leads Crucial Dialogue with EU Commission on Deforestation-Free Products Regulation

Kuala Lumpur, 25 June 2024: On June 21, 2024, the Malaysian Timber Council (MTC) and the Malaysian Timber Association (MTA) jointly organised a "Debriefing Session on the Mission on European Union Deforestation-free Regulation (EUDR) to Brussels, Belgium, and Utrecht, the Netherlands." This mission, facilitated by MTC and led by MTA as an industry initiative, took place from 27 to 31 May 2024. The hybrid session saw the participation of nearly 100 attendees, with 35 joining in person and 59 attending online.
The debriefing session was led by Mr. Yong Teng Koon, Chairman of the Coalition of Sustainable Timber, along with mission delegates Mr. Goh Chee Yew (MTA Advisor) and Mr. Khairul Anwar (MTC’s Strategic Planning and Sustainability Division Director). Key findings shared during the session included the potential grace period for EUDR implementation, the information system, country benchmarking system, geolocation, EUDR guidance document, non-compliance liability, due diligence system, and the enforcement approach of competent authorities in EU member states.
