International Timber Producers Unite in Brussels to Shape EUDR Implementation

Belgium, 10 June 2024: From May 27 to 31, 2024, the Coalition on Sustainable Timber visited Brussels, Belgium, to discuss the European Union's regulation on deforestation-free products (EUDR) with key stakeholders. Led by Malaysia, the Coalition includes representatives from Bolivia, Brazil, Ecuador, Indonesia, Nigeria, Paraguay, and Ghana. The mission aimed to advocate for balanced and effective EUDR implementation while identifying practical compliance approaches.
The Coalition met with representatives from the European Timber Industries Confederation (ETIC), the European Commission's Director-General for Environment (DG ENVI), the European Parquet Federation (FEP), and various national missions and embassies. Discussions focused on EUDR implementation timelines, guidelines, geolocation requirements, liability for non-compliance, and compliance verification criteria. Stakeholders stressed the need for practical approaches during the first year of enforcement, increased EU consultations with non-European timber-producing countries, and clear EUDR guidelines.
The Malaysian delegation was led by Mr. Yong Teng Koon, Chair of the Coalition, alongside Mr. Goh Chee Yew of the Malaysian Timber Association (MTA), Mr. Khairul Anwar from the Malaysian Timber Council (MTC), and Mr. Gopinathan Tanikudy, Regional Head of MTC Europe.
